Parliamentary group calls to End Isolation In Care

4 December:

The Relatives & Residents Association welcomes the report by the APPG on Coronavirus which calls on the Government to end isolation for people using care services. Echoing R&RA’s campaign, the APPG says isolation is having a “devastating impact on those in social care” and recommends visitors be granted keyworker status to enable visiting (with testing). It says the Government’s guidance on visiting in care homes has been inconsistent and unclear.

The damning report from the APPG states the social care sector has been failed during the pandemic, highlighting the urgent need for reform. Other findings echo R&RA’s submission to the APPG, including:

  • failures to produce mortality figures for those in social care from the outset and reports of blanket ‘do not resuscitate’ orders gave the impression that people needing care were less valued
  • the social care sector didn’t receive sufficient support, including PPE, testing, and guidance
  • quarantine arrangements for people moving from hospital to social care were inadequate
  • there has been no effective oversight of the social care sector since March
