CALL FOR OVERHAUL OF CQC
JOIN OUR PETITION FOR CHANGE

The Relatives & Residents Association is calling for a complete overhaul in the way CQC operates its regulation of care homes for older people. Since last year we have been pushing for changes which will see:

      • An increase to the frequency of inspections to a minimum of two per care home per year;
      • Thorough and in-depth inspections that rigorously scrutinize for tell-tale signs of good and bad care;
      • A friendly and approachable regulator which listens to and acts upon individual complaints about care.

The Panorama exposé on Monday 23 April 2012 showed the appalling treatment of a care home resident with dementia. At the time of CQC's inspections of the home, following an alert of her abuse, the 80-year-old was receiving round the clock protection. Despite this and the fact that five workers were subsequently dismissed the regulator continued to give the home a clean bill of health.

...We cannot go on watching the same mistakes being repeated over and over, the government HAS to do something now...                                                           Read R&RA news release here

CALL FOR TWICE YEARLY INSPECTIONS AFTER NURSE CONVICTED FOR ILL TREATMENT AND ASSAULT

Following the conviction of a nurse for assaulting an elderly resident The Relatives & Residents Association is once again calling for urgent action. We want to see the immediate reinstatement of twice yearly care home inspections.

Jonathan Aquino, a former nurse at Ash Court Care Centre, run by Forest Healthcare, was today sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment. His sentence came following his assault on 80 year old Maria Worroll, a resident at the home suffering with dementia and severe arthritis.  The abuse took place in a care home which had previously been given an excellent rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

R&RA AND CHRE IN JOINT SEMINAR

The Government is proposing a new scheme of voluntary registration of care workers. The scheme would be similar to registration of doctors and nurses - but unlike health professionals who must be registered with a regulatory body before they can work, the Government insists that any registration scheme for care workers must be voluntary.
