Support our campaign to improve inspections of care homes

On Monday 23rd April 2012, Panorama showed a shocking exposé of one woman's experience in a care home for older people. In it we saw an 80-year-old dementia sufferer undergoing the most degrading and inhumane treatment at the hands of her 'carers'. Subsequently five workers were sacked and one of them, a nurse, was convicted for assault and ill treatment and sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment.
Calling for change
The R&RA, believes that one way to improve care for older people and stamp out abuse is to have a powerful regulator which makes sure that care homes are inspected regularly. We also feel that inspectors should thoroughly scrutinize for tell-tale signs of good and bad practice and listen to individual complaints - something we know is not always happening.
We want to see immediate changes to the way the regulator, the Care Quality Commission, carries out inspections and we have set up an online petition. We need 100,000 signatures in order to be considered for debate in the House of Commons.
