R&RA has written to the Prime Minister, alongside five other organisations, urging him to include reopening of care homes in his roadmap out of lockdown. It follows a joint statement issued last week, setting a deadline for people living in care to be safely reunited with their essential caregivers by 1 March. The letter to the Prime Minister implores him to take this action by including it in plans for emerging from lockdown, which are due to be published on 22 February.
Helen Wildbore, director of R&RA, said:
“We call on the Prime Minister to show leadership to end isolation in care, which we know from our helpline is having dire and tragic consequences for older people. It is too late for too many, but we must now use all the tools at our disposal – including testing and PPE – to safely reunite families. Older people in care should expect to spend the time they have left not just as an existence, but as a life with dignity and love.”
