Visiting in care homes: summary of the law

12 November:

Throughout the pandemic, the R&RA Helpline has been supporting families who have been separated by visiting restrictions in care homes. Many families have had little or no contact for over eight months. The guidance issued by the Government on visiting in care homes has been updated several times over this period, and now a new lockdown brings new legal restrictions on our movement. As ever, R&RA is here for residents and families, helping to keep people informed about their rights and supporting them to be empowered to speak up to protect those rights.

We have produced a summary of the key law and guidance relevant to visiting in care homes. It covers:

  • The legal regulations imposing lockdown and the relevant exceptions permitting visits to care homes
  • The government guidance on visiting care homes
  • Other laws relevant to visiting, setting out legal rights and standards

If you would like further information or any advice or support on how this applies to you and your family, please get in touch with us. The R&RA Helpline can help you to explore what the regulations and guidance mean for your family, and support you to use these standards to negotiate with a care home for better contact with your relatives.
